Nestled between year-round trail access and the bustling energy of historic downtown Truckee, the Winter Creek ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) transformed an existing basement crawlspace into a livable rental unit. With a rising housing shortage, the client saw the potential to transform a dark unused space in their existing home into a comfortable and functional housing opportunity for a local employee. The design of the ADU prioritizes private exterior access and spatial efficiency to make the most of the limited space while still ensuring a mountain aesthetic. Slider doors were installed to maximize natural light, and a connection to the forested woods. Warm, bright materials such as light wood finishes and soft, neutral colors were chosen to create a welcoming atmosphere. The layout includes an Entry foyer into a compact kitchenette, a cozy bedroom, an office and a bathroom, all designed to meet the needs of a single occupant or a couple. This thoughtful conversion not only provides much-needed local housing but also enhances the property's value and utility. The family hopes their project will inspire others in Truckee to consider similar solutions to the housing shortage.
